‘Schumann walked every week to the statue of Beethoven in the centre of Bonn to talk to the statue, with one of his nurses following (he was in a mental institution). The nurse said Schumann walked so slowly it looked like he was walking backwards.
I used that idea to base the piece on the harmonic schedule of a Schumann song, slowed it down significantly and used the schedule in its retrograde.’
